PowerTitan is Sungrow's family of utility-scale battery energy storage systems: containers with liquid-cooled batteries, a power conversion system (PCS) and controls. The first generation includes the ST2752UX (2752 kWh), the second the ST5015UX (5015 kWh nominal and 2520 kVA), and Sungrow presented PowerTitan 3.0 in 2026.
What it is and where it is used
PowerTitan is the line of utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) from Sungrow. Each unit brings together in a container the lithium iron phosphate batteries, a liquid cooling system and the power conversion system (PCS). It connects to the medium-voltage grid through a transformer, normally inside a battery yard of tens or hundreds of MWh.
It is used to shift solar energy to the night hours, for frequency regulation and for grid backup, in solar plants with storage as well as in dedicated plants. Each generation and version has its own datasheet, and the North American ones (suffix “US”) differ from those for other markets in the PCS and in the standards.
Main features
- Liquid cooling. Sungrow describes an intelligent thermal management system to optimize auxiliary consumption and battery life. On PowerTitan 3.0, the press reports that the PCS is also liquid cooled.
- Separate cabinets. In the ST5015UX-2H, Sungrow separates the battery cabinet from the electrical cabinet, so that the propagation of a thermal fault is reduced.
- Pre-assembled. The system is assembled and functionally tested at the factory and shipped complete, which limits work on site.
- Electrical protection. The ST5015UX-2H page mentions electrical safety management and fast-disconnect protection with arc extinction on overcurrent.
- Maintenance. Sungrow indicates one-click remote system update and automatic coolant top-up.
- PowerTitan 3.0. According to the Renewable Watch article of February 2, 2026, the four-hour block reaches 7.2 MW / 28.5 MWh. The 450 kVA PCS per unit reaches 99.3 % peak efficiency and the system, 92 % round-trip efficiency. The stacked cells are 684, 661 and 640 Ah. These are press figures, not from a Sungrow datasheet.
Communications and integration
The management system (EMS3000 in the ST5015UX-2H) coordinates the batteries and the PCS, and integrates with the plant SCADA and with the plant controller (PPC) that receives the setpoints from the grid operator. Frequently asked technical questions
- ST5015UX datasheet: Sungrow publishes the ST5015UX with the two-hour and four-hour versions in a single document (2500 kW / 2 h and 1250 kW / 4 h). Use it instead of isolated figures.
- PowerTitan PCS: the US version of the ST2752UX indicates the SC5000UD-MV-US and the European page another inverter; the PCS depends on the region.
- System trip or lockout: the alarms of the battery management system, the PCS and the transformer cell relay are checked; they are three different records.
- AC or DC coupling: the PowerTitan includes its own converter, so it connects on the AC side to the plant transformer.
What to verify when integrating a utility-scale BESS
- Connection studies. A BESS changes the power flow in both directions and its short-circuit current contribution; the connection study and the protection must take it into account from the start.
- Region and standards in the datasheet. North American datasheets differ from those of other markets in the PCS and in certification. Ask for the one for your market.
- Fire safety. Thermal propagation studies, separation between containers and response plans are usually required. Sungrow separates the battery and electrical cabinets; the distance between containers is defined by the site design.
- Acceptance tests. Besides the electrical tests of the transformer, switchgear and protection, system performance (capacity, efficiency, response time) and communication with dispatch are verified; see BESS commissioning.
- Auxiliary services. Liquid cooling and the control system consume energy; the design of the auxiliary services and the backup supply of the control must be sized for that load.
