Control, protection and communications configuration

Everything programmable in the substation, configured and tested. We configure the control, protection and communications of substations and industrial facilities, and we test every signal from the field device to the control center.

Configuration is done remotely; testing on site is done in Colombia, or elsewhere on request. We load relay settings, logic and communications from our office through remote relay configuration.

What is included

Control

Bay controllers, RTUs and control logic, with local and remote commands and verified interlocking.

  • Mimic diagrams and local commands on the bay controller
  • Interlocking and switching sequences
  • Programmable logic and automation
  • RTUs and status, measurement and command points
  • A backup of every configuration delivered

Protection

Settings and logic loaded into protective relays with each manufacturer's software, on new or in-service equipment.

  • Settings approved by the study or by the utility
  • Trip, reclosing and breaker failure logic
  • Teleprotection schemes
  • Event records and oscillography
  • Comparison against the approved configuration

Communications

Substation networks, IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-104 and -101, DNP3 and Modbus protocols, and time synchronization of all devices.

  • IEC 61850: SCL files (ICD, CID and SCD), GOOSE and MMS
  • IEC 60870-5-104 and IEC 60870-5-101 to the control center
  • DNP3 serial and over TCP/IP
  • Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP
  • Gateways, managed switches and VLANs
  • Time synchronization (SNTP, PTP or IRIG-B)
  • Point-to-point tests, FAT and SAT

Cybersecurity

Substation and plant devices and networks configured so that only authorized people get in, following IEC 62443, IEC 62351 and the local grid code.

  • Secure configuration of relays, IEDs, gateways and switches
  • Secure remote access, including for manufacturers
  • Backup and change control of every configuration
  • IEC 62443, IEC 62351 and local grid-code cybersecurity requirements in the engineering

Frequently asked questions

Do you work with equipment from any manufacturer?

With the main brands, using each manufacturer's configuration software. Tell us the brand and model of your devices and we will confirm whether we have the software and the experience for each one.

Can you integrate devices from different brands on the same IEC 61850 network?

Yes. We merge each manufacturer's ICD files into the substation configuration (SCD) and verify in testing that the GOOSE messages and MMS reports reach their destination.

Why does time synchronization matter?

Without a common clock, you cannot compare the events and oscillography records of different devices after a fault. We configure the devices and verify that they all take their time from the same source.

Do you run the tests with the control center?

Yes. We coordinate point-to-point tests with the control center operator and record the result of every signal, command and measurement in the test report.

Can this be done remotely?

Yes. Most of the configuration can be done from our office through secure remote access that you authorize; see our remote relay configuration service. Testing on site is done in Colombia, or elsewhere on request.

Need it for your project?

Send us the single-line diagram, the equipment list and your target date, and we will reply with scope and schedule.
