Short answer

Sepam relays connect to IEC 61850 through the ECI850 server (series 20, 40, 60 and 80) or the ACE850 interface (series 40, 60 and 80). Basic configuration is done with SFT2841 and advanced configuration with CET850. GOOSE is available only on series 60 and 80 with ACE850.

Two ways to connect a Sepam

A Sepam from Schneider Electric connects to an IEC 61850 network in one of these ways:

RouteSeriesNotes
ECI850 server20, 40, 60 and 80Up to 8 Sepam per server; up to 6 simultaneous connections; no GOOSE
ACE850 interface40, 60 and 80Up to 8 simultaneous connections; GOOSE on series 60 and 80; also Modbus TCP/IP

Both comply with editions 1 and 2 of IEC 61850-6, 61850-7-1 to 7-4 and 61850-8-1. The physical network can be 10/100BASE-T copper (ECI850 and ACE850) or 100BASE-FX multimode fibre (ACE850), in radial or ring. In a ring, the managed switches must support RSTP (802.1d 2004). For the relay, see Sepam series 20, 40 and 80. The parameter classification of IEC 61850-4 and the tool for each one are in IEC 61850-4 Parameters and Engineering Tools Explained.

Sepam SCL files

The configuration uses and generates four types of SCL file; to understand them, see IEC 61850 SCL files:

  • ICD: describes the functions and data of each Sepam type; they come in a library in the tools.
  • IID: the specific configuration of a single device in a project, to exchange with other tools.
  • CID: the operating configuration of each Sepam or ECI850; it is loaded into the device.
  • SCD: the configuration of the whole system; other configuration tools use it.

SFT2841 and CET850

  • SFT2841 produces the standard configuration, which uses all the ICD data unchanged. It detects the devices on the network, extracts their ICDs, generates each one’s CID and the SCD of the whole, and downloads the CID to the device.
  • CET850 is for advanced configuration: editing your own CID, SCD, IID or ICD, adding or removing Sepam units, changing communication parameters, and creating or changing data sets, report control blocks and GOOSE messages. Factory ICDs cannot be modified. It generates a customized ICD, a CID, an SCD or an IID.

The CID is downloaded to the device with SFT2841 or by FTP with a browser. The Sepam engineering network (E-LAN) runs in parallel with the IEC 61850 network (S-LAN), so SFT2841 connects over Ethernet without extra hardware. When to use buffered and when unbuffered reports, and how they are recovered with EntryID, is in Buffered and Unbuffered MMS Reports.

GOOSE on Sepam

To configure GOOSE, first configure the publisher and then the subscriber, and everything is saved in the SCD.

  • Publisher: a data set is created (it can start from the ICD’s BasicGseDs) and a GOOSE control block. Only SPS, DPS and quality data types are relevant. CET850 warns if the data set fits in an Ethernet frame.
  • Subscriber: the data attributes to subscribe to are chosen and assigned to the Sepam’s GOOSE inputs: 32, of which 31 are free and G516 is reserved for ACE850 presence detection. If several attributes are assigned to the same input, the Sepam applies an OR.
  • Reception quality: the QR (message did not arrive in time) and QD (structure is not as expected) attributes can be assigned to an input.
  • On the Sepam, SFT2841 assigns each GOOSE input to a control and monitoring function, and SFT2885 (Logipam) allows custom logic.

For the concept, see GOOSE and data sets.

Commissioning

Check the IP address and network of each interface, the server’s diagnostic pages, the CID download and the connection of each MMS client. For GOOSE, verify with an analyzer that the message arrives at the expected rate and that QR and QD are 0.

How we help

We configure IEC 61850 on Sepam and other relays: SCL files, data sets, reports and GOOSE, with tests against your master. See IEC 61850 integration and the remote configuration for Easergy and MiCOM. Integrating an ION9000 meter with ICD and CID files, data sets and GOOSE is covered in ION9000 Meter: IEC 61850 Configuration.

Frequently asked questions

Which Sepam series support GOOSE?

Series 60 and 80 with the ACE850 interface. Series 20 and 40 with ECI850 connect to IEC 61850 but without GOOSE.

How many Sepam units connect to one ECI850?

Up to 8. The manufacturer recommends at most 5 series 20, 3 series 40 or 2 series 60 and 80 units per server.

What is CET850 for if SFT2841 already exists?

SFT2841 generates the standard configuration with all the ICD data. CET850 lets you optimize it: create data sets and report control blocks, and configure GOOSE messages.
