Saitel DR and Saitel DP are Schneider Electric's substation RTUs and controllers; the Easergy T300, now PowerLogic T300, is the feeder RTU for medium and low voltage networks, and the T200I and T200P are its predecessors for switchgear. All of them collect signals, integrate relays over IEC 61850 or Modbus, and report to the control center over IEC 60870-5-104, IEC 60870-5-101 or DNP3.
What it is and where it is used
The Schneider Saitel DR and Saitel DP RTUs and the Easergy T300 (now PowerLogic T300) are Schneider Electric’s remote terminal units for power networks. An RTU collects statuses, measurements and alarms from the substation or switchgear, receives commands from the control center and, more and more, works as a gateway: it reads the relays over IEC 61850 or Modbus and delivers everything to SCADA over a telecontrol protocol.
Saitel is used in distribution and transmission substations, as an RTU, bay controller or protocol converter. The T300 is installed in medium and low voltage substations and in distribution switchgear for feeder telecontrol and network automation. Alongside them are the T200I and T200P, which remain in service, and the SCADAPack family (for example, the SCADAPack 474), used in remote water, oil and gas installations. For the general concept, read substation RTU and gateway.
Variants: Saitel DR, Saitel DP, Easergy T300, T200I, T200P and SCADAPack
| Model | Application | Main difference |
|---|---|---|
| Saitel DR | Modular substation RTU | General-purpose platform with input, output and communication modules |
| Saitel DP | High-performance substation controller | Greater capacity and operational redundancy |
| Easergy T300 / PowerLogic T300 | Feeder RTU for medium and low voltage | HU250 main unit and SC150 and SC160 switchgear controllers |
| Easergy T200I / T200P | Telecontrol of medium voltage switchgear | Predecessors of the T300, present in many networks |
| SCADAPack (e.g., 474) | RTU and controller for remote sites | Aimed at water, oil and gas rather than substations |
The real configuration of each unit depends on the installed modules and the protocol licenses; for example, the T300’s IEC 60870-5-104 master is ordered as an option.
Main characteristics
- Data acquisition with its own inputs and outputs; Schneider Electric advertises 1 ms synchronization in the Saitel modules.
- IED integration: Saitel and T300 are IEC 61850 client and server; Schneider Electric states that the Saitel IEC 61850 interfaces are KEMA certified.
- Local automation: interlocking, transfer or feeder reconfiguration logic.
- Cybersecurity: the T300 catalog mentions compliance with IEC 62443.
Communications and integration
- Toward the control center: IEC 60870-5-104, IEC 60870-5-101 and DNP3.
- Toward the relays: IEC 61850 client and Modbus, plus legacy protocols on Saitel.
- SCL files: the T300 imports CID files from the relays; the details vary between manufacturers, so they should be reviewed (SCL files).
- Software: Easergy Builder for Saitel DP, Saitel DR and PowerLogic T300.
Saitel DR and DP: what Schneider publishes about their architecture
Schneider Electric presents the Saitel DR range (catalog “EasyLogic Saitel DR”, document NRJED324205EN, version 02 of July 2024) as a platform for data acquisition, communications, automation and IED integration in distribution and transmission networks, generation and railways. The following emerges from its product sheets (in English):
- Operational redundancy: it can be applied to the power supply, the CPU, the communication channels or the whole system, with automatic switchover and hot-swappable modules. In a project, what gets duplicated is defined by criticality: duplicating only the CPU leaves the power supply as a single point of failure.
- Signal scale: supervision and control of thousands of input and output points. The real figure depends on the configuration and the licenses, and is not given here.
- Acquisition: modules with signal conditioning and built-in 1 ms time synchronization, with an independent time stamp per module.
- Protocols: a wide library of standard and legacy protocols. The IEC 61850 interface, as server and as client, is KEMA certified in class A, according to Schneider. The available protocols depend on the configuration and the licenses ordered, so two units with the same hardware can differ.
- Security notice: in 2025 Schneider published advisory SEVD-2025-252-02 on vulnerabilities in Saitel DR and Saitel DP. Before specifying or updating the firmware of an existing unit, check the affected version and the current fix on Schneider’s security portal; it is part of maintaining any RTU connected to an operational network.
Easergy T300 (PowerLogic T300): what is known
Schneider’s FAQ on IEC 61850 in the T300 states that its database is built on the IEC 61850 data model and that it supports IEC 61850 edition 2.0 client, server and gateway. With Easergy Builder, the IEDs’ CID files are imported and their data converted to another protocol for SCADA, which is how the T300 is used as a gateway for the switchgear relays. The unit is configured with an integrated web server and with Easergy Builder.
On hardware, Schneider’s documentation describes modules with medium voltage current and voltage measurement inputs, a transformer temperature input and a low voltage current input. It also describes communication modules, including a 4G one, and a battery-backed supply (PS50) that keeps the station in service if medium voltage is lost. That autonomy lets the control center keep seeing the switchgear and receive the loss-of-voltage signal. The duration depends on the installed battery and its condition. That is why the battery is part of telecontrol maintenance, not only of the primary equipment. A common practical point: when replacing a T200I with a T300, check the supply to the switchgear motors and the battery capacity, not only the signal map.
Points of attention when working on a Saitel or a T300
- Point map and control center addresses. This is the one thing the utility’s operator cannot see change: it is captured from the unit in service before touching it.
- Local/remote state. The logic that blocks SCADA commands with the switchgear in local is tested with the selector in each position.
- Time synchronization. A failure of the time source scrambles the sequence of events of several units at once (loss of PTP or IRIG-B synchronization).
- Protocol options. If the one the control center requests is an option, such as the T300’s IEC 60870-5-104 master, confirm that the unit includes it before the test date.
- Cybersecurity. Changing default passwords, role-based accounts and a review of open ports; the reference framework is IEC 62443 in substations.
Frequently asked technical questions
- Easergy T300 and SAITEL DR manuals: the manuals and the Easergy Builder manual are on Schneider Electric’s document portal. Use the one that matches your firmware version.
- Blocking SCADA commands in local mode: it is solved with the RTU logic and the status and command table, not with a relay setting. It must be agreed with the control center operator.
- A signal does not reach SCADA: it is almost always the point map, the object address or the data quality at the gateway. We cover it in substation SCADA and HMI system.
- Replacing a T200I: before choosing the new unit, capture the current signal list and the control center protocol, so the change is transparent to the operator.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Saitel DR and Saitel DP?
Both are Schneider Electric Saitel platforms for data acquisition, communication and IED integration. Saitel DP is presented as a high-performance substation controller, for large installations and with redundancy; Saitel DR is the general-purpose modular RTU. Both are configured with Easergy Builder.
Can the Easergy T300 work as an IEC 61850 gateway?
Yes. Schneider Electric states that the T300 has a database built on the IEC 61850 model and client, server and gateway functions (edition 2). It imports the relays' CID files and can forward that data to SCADA over another protocol, such as IEC 60870-5-104.
Which software configures a Saitel or a T300?
Easergy Builder, Schneider Electric's tool for Saitel DP, Saitel DR and PowerLogic T300. Before changing a configuration in service, save the current project and verify the unit's firmware version.
