Short answer

Enphase IQ8 is the Enphase microinverter family that Enphase describes as its first grid-forming microinverters. It includes the IQ8M and IQ8A for 240 V residential modules, the 480 W IQ8P for modules up to 670 W, and the 208 V three-phase IQ8P-3P and IQ8H-3P for small commercial systems. They communicate with the IQ Gateway over power line communication.

What it is and where it is used

Enphase Energy is a US company specialized in microinverters. A microinverter is connected under each PV module and converts its output to AC right there, with no long DC field wiring. The IQ8 family is the current one. Enphase describes it on its support site as its first grid-forming microinverters, able to operate grid-tied or islanded. They are compatible with the four IQ Battery models (3, 10, 3T and 10T).

On January 9, 2025, Enphase announced the launch of the IQ8P in Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica, naming Ingelnet de Colombia among its installers, with a 20-year limited warranty for units activated in those countries. This is a statement from the manufacturer itself.

For the inverter concept, see DC-DC converters and inverters; the comparison of topologies (string, microinverter and optimizer) is in string inverter, microinverter or optimizer.

Other string and hybrid inverter brands with their own guide: Solis inverters, Deye hybrid inverters, Fronius inverters, Growatt inverters and Chint Power CPS inverters.

Microinverter guides are also available for the Hoymiles microinverters.

Latin America datasheet (October 2025)

Enphase publishes a datasheet specific to Latin America for the IQ8+, IQ8M, IQ8A and IQ8HC series (reference DSH-00412, revision 5.0, October 2025). In it, each microinverter variant is distinguished by grid voltage and by the cable it ships with. Datasheet values:

CEC weighted efficiency97%97.5%97%96.5%96.5%

(The datasheet groups some columns; the maximum units per branch and the IQ8+ efficiency should be confirmed in the datasheet for your exact model.) Common parameters from the datasheet: maximum DC input voltage of 60 V, maximum module short-circuit current of 20 A, and nominal frequency of 60 Hz with an extended range of 47 to 68 Hz. The power factor is adjustable from 0.85 leading to 0.85 lagging, and night-time consumption is 21 to 26 mW. It weighs 1.1 kg, uses Stäubli MC4 connectors, and its double-insulated (Class II) enclosure is rated for outdoor use (NEMA Type 6). It is cooled by natural convection. The datasheet states that no DC/AC ratio is required.

Four points the datasheet makes explicit that affect an installation:

  • Grid voltage. The IQ8+, IQ8M and IQ8A are for 240 V split phase (range 211 to 264 V); the IQ8HC is also available for 208 V single-phase between phases at 120° (range 183 to 229 V). A note says the IQ8HC can also operate at 230 V between phases, and that a specific IQ Gateway model (ENV-S-AM1-230-60) is used for that voltage.
  • Branch limit. AC-side protection requires a maximum of 20 A per branch circuit, and the datasheet warns that limits may vary: the number per branch is set by local requirements.
  • Grid forming. The series datasheet states UL 1741 compliance in grid-forming mode only when installed with IQ System Controller 2 or 3. Without that equipment, do not assume backup capability.
  • 25-year warranty. The LATAM datasheet says the 25-year warranty is valid as long as an IQ Gateway is connected to the internet. The 20-year warranty Enphase announced for the IQ8P in Colombia is governed by its own warranty document.

IQ8P. Per the North American datasheet for the IQ8P-72-2-US (DSH-00058-4.0, October 2025), peak power is 480 VA and continuous power is 475 VA. Commonly used modules are 430 to 670 W, with an MPPT range of 36 to 55 V and a maximum input voltage of 65 V. DC current is 14 A and maximum module current (Isc) is 20 A. CEC weighted efficiency is 97.5%, 8 units fit on a 20 A branch at 240 V, and night-time consumption is 100 mW. It is configured for 240 V split phase and 60 Hz; the datasheet that applies to the version sold in Colombia must be requested from Enphase or its installer.

Rapid shutdown. The datasheets state that the product is UL listed as a rapid shutdown device for NEC 2014, 2017, 2020 and 2023 (section 690.12). They also state that it meets rapid shutdown for AC and DC conductors when installed per the manufacturer’s instructions. What applies in your jurisdiction is set by the local electrical code; in the US it is NEC 690. See rapid shutdown in PV systems.

Main features

  • Grid forming. The IQ8M/IQ8A datasheet describes a software-defined ASIC that allows operation grid-tied or in islanded mode; the exact behavior with batteries depends on the complete system.
  • Input. Maximum input voltage of 60 V and MPPT ranges of 30 to 45 V (IQ8M) and 32 to 45 V (IQ8A), per the 2024 datasheet.
  • DC current. The IQ8P handles a DC current of 14 A, according to Enphase.
  • Safety. Because each microinverter sits next to its module, the DC voltage on the roof is that of a single module. The rapid shutdown requirements that apply in each country are set by its code; the topic is developed in rapid shutdown in PV systems.
  • Warranty. The 20-year IQ8P warranty in Colombia is the one Enphase announces for units activated there.

Communications and integration

The microinverters communicate by power line communication (PLC) with the IQ Gateway (formerly Envoy), which reports them to the Enphase app and monitoring service and coordinates the IQ Battery and the other system components. This architecture is Enphase’s own and requires the IQ Gateway to be placed where network signal is good; integration with a plant SCADA, if the project calls for it, is studied case by case.

In small three-phase commercial installations, the IQ8P-3P and IQ8H-3P connect at 208 V. Interconnection conditions for small systems depend on the local code and the utility’s requirements.

Frequently asked technical questions

  • IQ8 manual and datasheet: Enphase publishes microinverter datasheets in its documentation center. Download the one for your model, because there are 2021 to 2024 versions with differences.
  • A microinverter does not report: check the IQ Gateway, the state of the power line and the unit’s synchronization, not the module.
  • Backup during a grid outage: requires the complete system with IQ Battery and the Enphase components that enable it; it is not a function of the microinverter alone; battery architecture is covered in hybrid solar system with batteries.
  • Disconnects from the grid: see inverter disconnects from the grid.

What to verify when specifying a microinverter system

  • Model and region. The «US» codes in the cited datasheets are North American. The grid voltage at the site (240 V split phase or 208 V three-phase) defines the variant; confirm it with Enphase or your authorized installer.
  • Module versus microinverter. Compare the module’s power, maximum input voltage (60 V) and short-circuit current with the microinverter input; the module ranges in the datasheets are commonly used values, not a guarantee.
  • AC circuit. In this topology the long wiring is AC and comes as trunk cable with connectors; the number of microinverters per branch and its protection are given by Enphase and the local electrical code.
  • Monitoring. The system depends on the IQ Gateway and its internet connection for tracking; power generation does not depend on that connection.
  • Warranty. The 20 years Enphase announced for the IQ8P apply to units activated in Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica; the exact terms are in the warranty document.
