Remote configuration of Eaton Form 6 recloser controls

We work with Eaton Form 6 recloser controls from the Cooper Power series, in pole-mount, yard and triple-single versions. Our team configures protection, reclosing, logic and communications remotely with ProView, and analyzes the control's events.

What it is and when you need it

Remote configuration of Eaton Form 6 controls is the service in which our team programs, reviews or modifies, remotely, the microprocessor control of an Eaton Cooper Power series recloser: protection, reclosing sequence, input and output logic, communications and records. The Form 6 is found on distribution networks, substation feeders and industrial feeders, for clients worldwide, and comes in several variants:

  • Form 6 pole-mount and yard controls, for three-phase reclosers.
  • Form 6-TS, for triple-single reclosers that can trip and reclose each phase independently.
  • Form 6-LS, for loop schemes that reconfigure the circuit after a fault.
  • Automatic source transfer applications, where the control coordinates the changeover from one source to another.

Each variant has its own settings and logic, and the factory configuration rarely matches what the network needs. That is why clients call us for new equipment, changes after a protection coordination study, new generation connected to the circuit, or analysis of an unexpected operation.

What is included

  • Engineering software. Eaton states that the Form 6 control is programmed with its ProView interface software, and publishes separate programming guides for ProView 4.x and 5.x. ProView also plots time-current curves, which helps review coordination with fuses and neighboring protection.
  • Protection and curves. Phase, ground and sensitive earth fault overcurrent, directional elements where applicable, inverse-time curves and voltage and frequency elements, according to the study.
  • Reclosing sequence. Operations to lockout, fast and delayed curves per operation, reclose and reset times, and lockout conditions.
  • Settings groups. We review every protection profile in the control, not just the active one, and the condition that switches between them.
  • Idea Workbench. ProView’s graphical tool to configure inputs, outputs, events and user logic. This is usually where each project’s specifics live: SCADA signals, interlocks and loop or transfer logic.
  • Communications. Protocol selection and mapping are done in ProView’s Communications Workbench; the control’s Ethernet settings are also configured from ProView. We set up the protocol your SCADA uses, for example DNP3.
  • Events and records. We download the event recorder, fault history and data capture of the control, and review them with you.
  • Backup. We save the active configuration before any change and compare what was loaded against what was approved.

We also confirm the rated system frequency (50 Hz or 60 Hz) in the settings. When a configuration file is reused from another project or market, a wrong frequency affects measurements and frequency elements.

How we work

First, you tell us the control variant, its firmware version, the recloser it is connected to and the approved settings. With that we confirm the matching ProView version. Then we agree with your team on access: through the control’s communication network, a modem or a technician on site connected to the configuration port. The connection is encrypted and enabled only for the authorized task.

During the work we save the active configuration, load settings and logic, and verify measurements, status points and SCADA signals with you. Secondary injection tests of the control and operation of the recloser are done on site, by your crew or by our test team in Colombia or on request elsewhere.

We do not publish step-by-step ProView procedures: they depend on the variant, the firmware and the scheme of each circuit, and they are the work we do for you.

Version and compatibility precautions

  • ProView version. The programming guide changes between ProView 4.x and 5.x; using the wrong version can prevent reading or loading the configuration.
  • Control variant. A file from a three-phase Form 6 will not work on a Form 6-TS or in a loop scheme.
  • Configuration port. On many controls the front port is dedicated to ProView configuration; remote access depends on the control having communications enabled up to a secure point.
  • Firmware. Upgrading it is a separate job, which we only do with your approval and a verified backup.

What we need from you

  • Form 6 control variant, firmware version and associated recloser.
  • Approved settings or the protection coordination study.
  • The scheme logic if the control runs in a loop or source transfer scheme.
  • The control’s communication link and secure access to it.
  • Your authorization for each job on in-service equipment.

What you receive

  • The final control configuration file and a backup of the previous one.
  • The applied settings table, with every protection profile, compared against the approved settings.
  • Documented Idea Workbench logic, with the function of every input and output.
  • The protocol map to the SCADA, when applicable.
  • Event and fault analysis, if requested, and a written report for each session.

Standards and criteria

Reclosers are covered by IEC 62271-111 / IEEE C37.60. Inverse-time curves follow IEEE C37.112 or IEC 60255-151, depending on the study, and telemetry usually runs on DNP3 (IEEE 1815). Reclosing, single-phase tripping and source transfer must be reviewed together with the rest of the circuit’s protection; if you need the settings defined first, our team can carry out a protection coordination study, adapted to the local code and the utility requirements that you give us. Our general service for all brands is described under remote recloser configuration.

Tiza Group works with Eaton equipment as an independent engineering company. We are not a representative, distributor or authorized service center of the brand, and product names belong to their manufacturer. Tell us your control variant and firmware on our contact page and we will confirm the scope.

Frequently asked questions

Which software is used to configure a Form 6 control?

ProView, Eaton's interface software to program and interrogate the control. It includes Idea Workbench for input, output and event logic, and Communications Workbench for communication protocols.

Does the ProView version matter?

Yes. Eaton publishes separate programming guides for ProView 4.x and 5.x, and each control version states which one applies. Before any work we confirm which version your control requires.

Which Form 6 variants do you configure?

We work with pole-mount and yard variants, triple-single tripping variants and those used in loop schemes or automatic source transfer. Settings and logic differ for each one, so please tell us the exact variant.

Can you explain a trip on my recloser with a Form 6 control?

Yes. We download the control's event and fault records and explain what it saw, which sequence it ran and whether the operation was correct.

Is Tiza Group an Eaton representative?

No. We are an independent engineering company that works with Eaton equipment. We are not a representative, distributor or authorized service center of the brand.
